Halal Food in Ajman: The Questions Worth Asking, and Our Answers

Mutton karahi cooked to order with halal meat at Zafran Kitchen, Ajman Industrial Area 2

"Halal restaurant near me" is one of the most common food searches in the UAE and one of the least useful, because in Ajman the answer is almost always yes. Meat sold here is regulated, imported meat has to carry halal certification, and a restaurant serving non-halal meat in the Sanaiya would be an unusual thing.

So the question that actually distinguishes one kitchen from another is not whether the meat is halal. It is what else is true about it. Here are the four questions worth asking, and our answers to each.

1. Is alcohol served on the premises?

This is the one that varies most and it is a legitimate concern for a lot of families, independent of the meat itself. Plenty of restaurants serving halal meat also hold a licence.

Our answer: no. There is no alcohol on the premises and never has been.

2. Is pork handled anywhere in the kitchen?

Some larger operations run a separate section, separate boards and separate storage, and do it properly. Others are less careful. Either way it is a fair thing to ask about, and a kitchen that is doing it properly will not mind answering.

Our answer: no pork is handled anywhere on site. There is no separate section because there is nothing to separate.

3. How fresh is the meat, and where does it come from?

This is the question that actually changes what arrives on your plate, and it is the one almost nobody asks. Halal certification tells you about the slaughter. It tells you nothing about whether the mutton has been frozen for four months.

Our answer: it comes in fresh, not frozen, and it is cooked to order. The constraint we work to is simple: if a cut cannot be cooked properly on the day it arrives, it does not go on the menu that day. That is why you will occasionally be told something is finished.

You can see the consequence of this in the karahi section. A Shinwari karahi is meat, tomato, salt and the fat rendered from the meat itself. There is no gravy, no paste and no masala base to hide behind. A kitchen cannot serve a good Shinwari with poor meat, which is exactly why it is worth ordering as a test.

4. What is actually in the dish?

Halal is not the only dietary question people arrive with. Dairy, nuts, gluten and mustard all appear across our menu, sometimes in places you would not predict: there is cashew in the house handi, cream and cheese in the reshmi kabab, and mustard seed in the achari handi.

Our answer: ask, and we will tell you plainly. If you have an allergy, tell us before you order and we will tell you honestly whether we can serve you safely. We would rather lose an order than guess.

What "halal" does not tell you

Worth saying plainly, because a lot of restaurant marketing leans on the word as though it settles everything.

Halal certification covers the slaughter and the handling of the meat. It says nothing about whether the food was cooked this morning or three days ago, whether the oil has been changed, whether the karahi goes on the fire after you order it, or whether the portion is honest. Those are all separate questions and they are the ones that determine whether you enjoy your dinner.

A kitchen that answers all five questions the same way every time you ask, without hesitating, is the one to keep going back to.

Common questions

Is food in Ajman automatically halal?
Meat sold in the UAE is regulated and imported meat must be certified halal, so the default in Ajman is halal. What varies between restaurants is not whether the meat is halal but whether alcohol is served, whether pork is handled anywhere on site, and how fresh the meat is.
Does Zafran Kitchen serve alcohol or pork?
No. There is no alcohol on the premises and no pork is handled anywhere in the kitchen. All meat is halal and comes in fresh.
How fresh is the meat?
It comes in fresh rather than frozen, and it is cooked to order. If a cut cannot be cooked properly on the day it arrives, it is not on the menu that day.
Can you tell me about a specific dish if I have a dietary question?
Yes. Ask at the counter or on WhatsApp at 050 720 8707. Dishes may contain dairy, nuts, gluten or mustard, and if you have an allergy we will tell you honestly whether we can serve you safely rather than guessing.
